Exclusive: Danny Rohl's seven-figure Sheffield Wednesday release clause detailed as Southampton eye new manager

EFL Analysis can exclusively reveal that Danny Rohl, who is being considered to become the new Southampton manager, has a seven-figure release clause in his Sheffield Wednesday contract.

Sheffield Wednesday have endured a mixed 2024/25 campaign under the guidance of Danny Rohl.

They failed to win five Championship matches in a row early in the season and recently went on a run of four defeats in five, seeing them drop down the division.

However, ahead of Sheffield Wednesday facing Sheffield United on Sunday, the Owls still remain in with a shot of securing a spot in the play-offs come May.

They are five points adrift of sixth-place Coventry City with nine fixtures to play, but do have a much worse goal difference than Frank Lampard’s men and all of the teams currently above them.

No matter what happens in the final two months of the season, however, it looks as though Rohl will be departing Hillsborough.

Danny Rohl release clause revealed as Sheffield Wednesday exit expected

Speaking to TBR Football’s Chief Football Correspondent and transfer expert Graeme Bailey, EFL Analysis learned that the German is set to leave Sheffield Wednesday this summer and has a release clause worth nearly £5m.

Rohl is being eyed by Premier League strugglers Southampton, alongside ex-Hull City manager Liam Rosenior.

Bailey said: “Championship-bound Southampton are already making plans for their next manager – Ivan Juric has a break clause and he is not expecting to stay,

“The Southampton hierarchy are doing their work on we know they are looking at plenty of options. Although they are going down in pretty limp fashion, they will still be one of the favourites for promotion next season.

“Former Hull City boss Liam Rosenior is emerging as an option, amongst others that also include Danny Rohl.

“Rohl is set to leave Sheffield Wednesday this summer, but I am told he has a substantial release clause worth close to £5million and that could be an issue.”

Danny Rohl asked about Sheffield Wednesday future

Rohl has worked wonders with the Owls, taking them from relegation candidates in 2023/24 to potential play-off contenders a year later.

When asked about his future last week, though, as per the Yorkshire Post, the 35-year-old remained coy.

He said: “All the rumours don’t influence me. My full energy is here with Sheffield Wednesday.

“I am not listening to left and right. My focus is here because I know what we have to do, I know my responsibility to this group, to the club, for our massive fans.”

Rohl is under contract with Sheffield Wednesday until the summer of 2027.
