The city is gearing up for a big weekend as Newcastle United gets set take on Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.

Getting in the spirit, Newcastle City council leader Karen Kilgour, lord mayor Rob Higgins, and sheriff Henry Gallagher sported their black and white stripes on Friday lunchtime and raised a huge Wor Flag above the Civic Centre to cheer on the Magpies ahead of the game.

The three - who are all huge NUFC fans - will be joining the tens of thousands of lucky fans that secured tickets heading down to Wembley to watch the team play. While back in the city centre, Newcastle is expected to become a sea of black and white supporters with plenty of places to watch the cup final.

City council leader Karen Kilgour told ChronicleLive: "I'm, nervous and excited. This is my first going to Wembley, I'm absolutely thrilled it's really exciting. I'm hoping we'll actually bring the cup home which will be fantastic.

"I wish Eddie and the lads all the luck in the world, it's definitely our time. I'm not going to give a score prediction as I'm really superstition about the match but they'll do it. this is huge for the city and we're so grateful and hopeful. I can't tell you how proud I am."

Lord Mayor Rob Higgins said: "Today we've been delighted to raise the flag outside the Civic Centre on behalf of the lads this weekend. It shows that everybody in the city, including the Lord Mayor and the Sherriff and everybody here are really behind the lads.

"It's a great weekend and the toon army is going to be down in London, our spirits are high and if we can come back successful its a wonderful boost for Newcastle. Good luck to the lads."

Sherriff Henry Gallagher added: "I hope we'll see many of you there down in Wembley and we may toast another Newcastle victory. Howay the lads."
