'No, no!' - Bruno Guimaraes reveals Newcastle United ritual binned for Carabao Cup final v…

There will be no bleach-blonde Bruno when Newcastle United take on Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday!

Bruno Guimaraes and Brazilian compatriot Joelinton often like dying their hair for the big occasions, doing exactly that when the Magpies last reached a cup final two years ago.

But after losing 2-0 to Manchester United - a result that left Guimaraes in tears at full-time - the pair have opted against a repeat this time around.

“No, no, not this time! No, no, not this time,” said Guimaraes, who sat alongside Alexander Isak at Newcastle’s media centre on Friday to preview the visit to Wembley. “Yeah, normal one, normal one, let's see this time. If I get more lucky!”

‘We know it’s a World Cup final’

The occasion and what it means to Newcastle United fans isn’t lost on Guimaraes, who, as captain, will lead the team out at Wembley.

“Feeling good, feeling good,” said Guimaraes. “Feeling it's a good opportunity for ourselves. To be honest, we cannot wait to get there, everyone is very excited. As a team, as a city, I think we have been working very hard.

“Since we are together here, it's a big opportunity, and hopefully everything is going to be good, and we can finally get this trophy back to Newcastle.

“Of course, I think we're more relaxed than the fans, but we know exactly what it means to them. It's a long time.

“For us, we have been together for three years, and we have seen this opportunity as a big one. But from the point of view of the fans, we know it's a World Cup final, because it's a long, long time. We want to make everyone in the city happy.

“We have our targets as well. It's going to be a good game with two teams. We have to play our game, nothing different, and hopefully everything is going to be good for us.”

Making history as a Newcastle United captain

But more importantly, the midfielder is aiming to become the first Newcastle skipper to get his hands on a trophy since Bob Moncur in 1969.

“Many times, probably since we got final I've been thinking this a lot [about lifting the cup].” Guimaraes said. “But as I said, I don't want to get too excited about it, focus on the game first and when we get there it's going to be very good. But of course, I imagine me there, in this place.

“I feel it's more confidence, of course when we made a final before you get more experience as a team. Of course we changed some players, but the base is still there.

“I think we are in our best moment than we were the last time we faced Man U in the final. So, very confident, positive, hopeful we can go there and play our best football because i on our best day I think we are really a great team.

“Yeah, I want a tear of happiness this time, you know. Everyone knows how emotional I am. I always try to give everything that I have on the pitch, to play as a fan, because I know what it means for them.

“So, yeah, I still remember this moment. Like I said, next time I want to cry with happiness and hopefully everything's going to be good for us on the day.”
