A man ‘started crying’ to his mum after receiving a surprising email. Alex Edwards, 30, moved from Merseyside to Perth in Australia several years ago.
He still keeps in touch with his mum Sharron, who is originally from Dingle but now lives on Heswall. Despite living on the other side of the world, Alex has kept up his support for Liverpool FC, often watching games in the early hours of the morning.

Meanwhile it’s Sharron’s responsibility to send the new kit over every year for her grandson Mackenzie, who is three years old. Speaking to the ECHO, Sharron said: “He has always been a fan. It’s the classic thing, half of the family are Liverpool and the other half are Everton.
“All of my kids live in Australia actually. They're the first ones in Perth with the new kits. It costs me a fortune. Alex is such a nice and lovely guy.”
However, unbeknownst to his mum, Alex entered a raffle from West Derby-based hospice Zoe’s Place to win two tickets to this Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Newcastle.
This morning, he rang up Sharron to tell him that he has been successful. She said: “He got an email out of the blue telling him he’d won. He rang me at 5am asking if I could help with the travel arrangements.

“I didn't even know he'd entered. He’s a good lad and a true red. I know there’s a lot of LFC fans there as well but because he’s a dad often he sits on his own watching the game at 4am at home. When he rang me he said, ‘I’m crying, it’s like I’ve won the lottery.’
“He’s got a little boy called Mackenzie and he wanted to take him to the game but I said he was too little. He’s going with his friend from school instead who now lives in London.”
“The last match Alex went to live was a long time ago. Alex has been in Australia for six or seven years. Zoe’s Place knew that he’s living in Australia and thought he might not be able to come. He went, no way, I’m going.”
Alex works down the mines in Perth but has managed to get time off for the occasion. He sorted a flight which will get him into London on the morning of the game.
However, Sharron wanted to see her son before he flew back down under on Tuesday. She posted an appeal on Facebook to see if anyone could take him back no Merseyside after the final and within hours the arrangements had been sorted.
She said: “I put it up on Facebook and we got responses really quickly. It’s amazing. That just shows you how good all the fans are. People are surprised when I tell them all my kids are in Australia. To even spend 24 hours with him is an amazing gift.”
Sharron is proud that her family in Australia remain very connected to Merseyside. She said: “I just think it's a wonderful prize. For us, it doesn't matter where you are, your roots are always strong. We’re originally from the Dingle. It’s just a really proud family.
“There’s a great divide between Everton and Liverpool but at the end of day, we’re all really proud of him. I don't know anyone who doesn't like Alex.”
