David Ornstein has confirmed that Manchester City and Barcelona are genuinely interested in Liverpool winger Luis Diaz.
Reports emerged last summer that the Premier League and La Liga side had made an offer to sign the Colombian forward. But at the end of the summer he stayed back and has been a key player under slot.
However, reports of interest from Barcelona, in particular, have not gone away.
For example, in December, a report from Colombia claimed that Diaz was keen on moving to La Liga side Barcelona.
The Athletics’ David Ornstein has now confirmed that Los Blancos remain interested in Diaz.
Responding to a fan who asked if there was any update on Diaz’s contract situation, Ornstein responded:
“Still no sign of a new contract, which is unusual for such a prominent player who has been at Anfield for as long as Diaz. Barcelona have long been linked with him; their admiration is genuine.
“There was definitely something in the Manchester City reports last summer, too. If he is available, there will be many suitors. Amid all the focus on Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, this is one of the lesser-mentioned unknowns at Anfield, ut still hugely important.
“As we know, Liverpool looked at Anthony Gordon before the June 30 PSR deadline, but I don’t know if that will be revisited. They will naturally have a number of other options, too, if something needs to be activated.”
Barca’s interest in Daiz goes way back, with the Spanish club one of the many clubs interested in signing him before he joined Liverpool.
In November 2023, Barca club president Joan Laporta said on Diaz:
“At the time (January 2022), we had just arrived at the club, and Liverpool beat us to it.”
“We were considering his incorporation, but we were facing an economic situation that we had to resolve and reverse.”
“I recognize that in the past, when Luis Diaz went from Porto to Liverpool, we also had a conversation with the agent, but Liverpool already had him moving forward.”
Barcelona’s sporting director Deco is also thought to be a fan of the 28-year-old, with his father previously acknowledging Díaz’s “dream” of playing for the La Liga giants:
“It is true that Luis is a loyal Barcelona fan and it would be his dream to go there.”
And now Diaz has spoken further on his son.
