Gunners reload interest in Toon star The Chronicle (UK)14 Mar 2025By LEE RYDER NEWCASTLE United skipper Bruno Guimaraes is understood to be back on Arsenal’s radar again – but suggestions that he has a release clause have been rubbished. Although, the Magpies star has already pledged his allegiance to the black-and-white cause by insisting he is only focused on winning silverware at St James’ Park. Bruno will be the man who goes up to lift the Carabao Cup should Newcastle pull off a remarkable victory over Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday. However, the arrival of Andrea Berta at Arsenal as new transfer chief has sparked talk on the circuit that the Gunners will be back in for the Brazil international this summer. A suggestion that Bruno has a £60million release clause if Newcastle don’t qualify for the Champions League in 2025/26 has emerged in the Spanish media but The Chronicle can confirm this is not true, according to our sources. The Chronicle understands that Bruno has no release clauses in his contract and Arsenal would have to pay the full amount of his valuation if they were interested. The link between Berta and the Bruno camp comes from his Lyon days when Atletico Madrid – Berta’s old club – looked closely at Guimaraes. But in 2022, Newcastle, flush with Saudi money after the takeover, gazumped Atletico and Juventus in the January window to seal the deal for the South American. Bruno has made it clear he is happy on Tyneside and lifting a trophy and or qualifying for the Champions League would put any talk of an exit to bed this season. When asked what his aims for a successful 2025 were, Guimaraes told the United magazine: “Of course, to get back to European football, but the best one for me is to lift a trophy for the club. “It’s something that I really want to do – like, really, really, want with all my power. I really want to do something for the fans. I think we deserve it. We were too close once, but I think if we go again, we have to handle this with all the strength we have.” With Thomas Partey and Jorginho approaching the end of their contracts Arsenal are in the hunt for a midfielder.

Arsenal have reportedly once again turned their attention to Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimarães as they look to reinforce their midfield this summer, according to The Chronicle.

Speculation surrounding Guimarães’ future has intensified with the expected arrival of Andrea Berta as Arsenal’s new sporting director.

The Italian’s appointment has led to suggestions that the Gunners will revive their long-standing pursuit of the Newcastle midfielder.

Spanish media reports claimed that Guimarães has a £60 million release clause that could be activated if Newcastle fail to qualify for the Champions League next season.

However, The Chronicle refutes this, stating that no such clause exists.

Any move for the midfielder would require Arsenal to negotiate directly with Newcastle, who remain in a strong financial position following their Saudi-backed takeover in 2021. Guimarães is currently valued at €80m and has three years remaining on his current contract.

Atlético Madrid, under Berta’s guidance, closely monitored the Brazilian during his time at Lyon, only to be beaten to his signature by Newcastle in January 2022.

This seems to be the root of the renewed links with Arsenal with Berta’s appointment expected at the club before the end of the month. That being said, Arsenal were also heavily linked with the midfielder before he landed at Newcastle.

Guimarães has given no indication that he is seeking a departure from Tyneside. Like most players linked with an exit, his immediate priority is success with his current club and in securing a return to European football.

With Thomas Partey and Jorginho approaching the final months of their contracts, Arsenal are expected to prioritise multiple midfield signings this summer.

Whether Guimarães becomes a realistic target will depend on Newcastle’s willingness to sell – and whether Arsenal are prepared to meet what would undoubtedly be a hefty valuation with so many other positions to address.
