'I would always' - Brendan Rodgers on how he reacted to Celtic vs Rangers clashes as Leicester…

Brendan Rodgers left Celtic under a massive grey cloud in February 2019.

On course to secure a third domestic Treble, Rodgers decided to depart Parkhead for Premier League outfit Leicester City – and Celtic fans were fuming.

Rodgers enjoyed over four years at the King Power Stadium and helped deliver the club FA Cup success for the first time in their history.

Moreover, Leicester City played back-to-back campaigns in Europe as they reached the last 32 of the Europa League and the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League.

Rodgers was sacked and returned to Celtic in the summer of 2023 after Ange Postecoglou sadly left for Tottenham Hostpur at the end of the season.

Celtic fans were initially sceptical but all was forgiven when he kept his promise of winning the Premiership title, while also securing glory in the Scottish Cup.

Rodgers’ support for Celtic remained at Leicester City

But how did Rodgers view Celtic during his time as Leicester City boss, given that the Hoops supporters went from worshipping him to despising him?

Well, he has revealed that he would still tune in to the Glasgow derbies against Rangers and cheer on the team he supported as a boy in Northern Ireland.

MORE CELTIC STORIES

Celtic face Rangers this Sunday in the derby at Parkhead and Rodgers told reporters at his pre-match press conference how he would support the Bhoys down south.

He said: “No, I would always cheer in the house or wherever I was. So yes, listen, you feel the emotion. That’s what the game is, isn’t it?

“And in particular, this game is about the emotional connection that you have with your team, the support, and that joy that you get from making everyone happy. So yes, that’s only normal.”

Celtic’s derby record without Brendan Rodgers (2019-2023)

Neil Lennon was the man to replace Rodgers in a time of need for Celtic as he helped finish off the Treble success of the 2018/19 campaign.

The former Hoops midfielder would eventually be installed as permanent Celtic manager for a second time and went on to win another five major trophies.

Record vs Rangers (2019-2023) Wins Defeats

Neil Lennon 3 6

Ange Postecoglou 6 3

Lennon oversaw 10 Glasgow derbies during his second stint and only managed to win three of them, with Steven Gerrard getting the better of him most of the time.

Ange Postecoglou’s was understandably way better. The Aussie-Greek faced Rangers on 11 occasions and lost just three, two of which in his first season at Parkhead.
