Pittsburgh Steelers lose massive offensive lineman

Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Nate Herbig is heading to the Washington Commanders. Herbig was with the Steelers on a two-year deal, but this year will get just a one-year contract in Washington.

He missed the 2024 season with a torn rotator cuff sustained in training camp. It left Zach Frazier the unquestioned starter after Herbig’s injury.

That injury occurred late in practice, and Herbig left the field and did not return, with Frazier taking over the first team reps for the rest of the season.

Herbig can play center or either guard spot, allowing him to work as an interior swingman for any offensive line. He fits better in a gap scheme than a zone scheme, something the Comamnders will be more adept at running than the Steelers have under Arthur Smith’s heavy wide zone scheme.

The Steelers still require an interior player, though they brought back Ryan McCollum as depth early in the offseason. However, they could try to find someone like Herbig who can fill in if there are injuries along the offensive line.
