New York Giants free agency: LB Patrick Johnson returns to Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed former New York Giants linebacker Patrick Johnson, per a report from Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

The Giants claimed Johnson off waivers from the Eagles on Sept. 17th of last season. Johnson had played for the Eagles since they drafted him out of Tulane in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL draft.

Johnson played in 12 games for the Giants this past year. He was almost exclusively a special teams player, getting 263 special teams snaps (83%), compared to just 46 defensive snaps (6%). He was also primarily a special teams player for the Eagles as well.

While Johnson played a lot of snaps for the Giants on special teams, they've taken steps the third side of the ball. Most notably, they agreed to terms with line backer Chris Board early in the process. Board and Johnson have similar size at 6-foot-2, 240 pounds, and Board could fill a similar role as Johnson.
