Burnley’s compensation claim against Everton could be worth up to £15million after an update has emerged in their legal battle, sources have told Football Insider.
The Championship side were one of five clubs alongside Leeds United, Leicester City, Southampton and Nottingham Forest to apply for compensation after Everton were charged with a profit and sustainability (PSR) breach for 2021-22 and 2022-23.
The Merseyside giants were docked eight points last season following their spending breaches, with top-flight clubs only permitted to make £105million of losses over a rolling three-year period.
David Phillips KC, the chairman of the commission that handed out the first points deduction, revealed he was satisfied the applicant clubs have potential claims for compensation.
The Lawyer reported on 12 March Everton have appointed Mark Howard KC to lead their case against Burnley this summer.
Burnley are claiming they missed out on extra revenue following their relegation in the 2021-22 season, with Everton found to have breached the PSR rules in that campaign.

The Lancashire club, who finished third-bottom and four points behind Everton, are understood to have missed out on around £58million of broadcast revenue as a result of their relegation.
Sources have told Football Insider Burnley have a case for a loss of chance claim after pursuing legal action against the Merseysiders.
However, the club’s compensation claim is likely to be worth between £10-15million after they received parachute payments and reduced their wage bill dramatically following their relegation to the Championship.

Everton are close to PSR limit after Friedkin transfer stance
Everton were at risk of landing a further punishment after the independent commission that oversaw the second PSR case postponed an argument over the capitalisation of the new stadium interest by the club.
However, it was confirmed in January they have resolved all of their outstanding PSR issues after the Premier League formally discontinued the second part of the complaint.
Finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider Everton are close to the PSR limit again this season after they had a quiet January transfer window.
The loan signing of midfielder Carlos Alcaraz from Flamengo was the club’s only new addition following The Friedkin Group’s takeover in December.

Everton have eased their Premier League relegation fears
Everton are set for ‘massive’ rebuild after contract news
Borson told Football Insider Everton are set to undergo a “massive” rebuild due to the number of players out of contract at the end of this season.
There are 10 players with contracts expiring in June 2025, while four loanees will return to their parent clubs if permanent deals fail to materialise over the coming months.
David Moyes has helped ease Everton’s relegation fears since returning to Goodison Park in January, with his side now sitting 16 points above the drop zone in 15th place.
