Showcasing all things STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math), this year’s fair theme is “Nature’s Innovations.” According to the Mendocino County Office of Education, the event organizer, the theme focuses on how the county “can lead the way in balancing the needs of both people and the planet.”

The free event will feature interactive exhibits and hands-on activities from myriad community partners, including the Mendocino College Agriculture Department, California Conservation Corps, California State Parks, the California Native Plant Society, the University of California, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Mendocino County Museum, among others. Local food trucks will also be on hand, ensuring future innovators have full bellies during their fair explorations.

There will also be an opportunity for educators working in the realm of STEAM to gain new skills and inspiration through the fair’s expanded learning program, which includes meeting with STEAM educators and free curriculum kits.

Students from throughout Mendocino County will also display their juried fair projects. Winners of the show will advance to the California Science and Engineering Fair where they will compete against students from around the state for cash prizes.

“The Science Fair is a great way for families to have fun together through discovery. It’s exciting to see Mendocino County students experimenting, problem-solving, and sharing their ideas,” said county Superintendent Nicole Glentzer. “The hands-on activities from our community partners make it an engaging event for all ages.”

The 39th annual Mendocino County Science and Engineering Fair & STEAM Expo takes place Saturday, March 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Mendocino College. Admission is free. More information is available on the Mendocino County Office of Education website.
