Gavi shares his thoughts on Alvarez controversy ahead of Barca vs Atleti

Barcelona are set to take on Atletico Madrid on Sunday in La Liga and face a team having to pick themselves up from a heartbreaking Champions League defeat to Real Madrid.

Diego Simeone’s side were beaten in a shootout after Julian Alvarez saw his spot-kick controversially disallowed for a double touch.

VAR intervened almost instantly to chalk the goal off, sparking plenty of debate about the rights and wrongs of the decision.

Gavi’s been asked about the incident and had his say on what he thinks should have happened.

“The referees are the ones who decide and they have that rule. I don’t know how it works, but whatever the referee decides, we’ll have to trust it,” he told Movistar.

“I don’t know exactly how it goes, but I would do this: if he touches it twice, I would retake the penalty. But I don’t know, and let the referees decide.”

UEFA has since issued a statement on the matter and explained plans to review the rule when a double touch is “clearly unintentional.”
