SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Notre Dame football has often been called O-line U because of it’s great offensive lines over the years and because so many Notre Dame linemen have gone on to the NFL.
Last year the offensive line was a weak spot for the team because of injuries and so many young players, but this year that experience should make the O-line a strength.
Aamil Wagner will return at right tackle, after a solid year as a first time starter in 2024. Billy Schrauth returns to play left or right guard after a solid season last year. He started the season at right guard, but then missed a few games with an injury. When he came back he played left guard because Rocco Spindler was playing well as his replacement at right guard. Spindler decided to go into the transfer portal at the end of the year and ended up at Nebraska. Got that?
Ashton Craig started at center last year but was lost for the season after the Purdue game. He should be back at center in 2025. Pat Coogan replaced him in 2024 and became a social media sensation with his “four quarters of f\*\*\* you football” saying. Coogan also entered the transfer portal and ended up at Indiana. His leadership will be missed, but Craig is considered a bigger and more talented player.
Then you have two guys who started at left tackle for the Irish. Charles Jagusah was penciled in to start in the first game against Texas A&M, but he got hurt before the season started. His replacement was true freshman Anthonie Knapp, who started every game but the championship game. Knapp got hurt in the game against Penn State, so Jagusah played left tackle during the final game. He had recovered from his injury in fall camp. Got all that?
“The experience those guys got last year, especially with the College Football Playoff run, will definitely help this year,” says WNDU sports anchor Sabrina Hoover. “They also have great size and talent. The offensive line should be really good.”
Bottom line, they’re a talented group, and they now have experience, which should make them a strong unit in 2025.
