It's very, very possible Cooper Kupp could join Seahawks

Could All-Pro Cooper Kupp return home to the Pacific Northwest? One NFL analyst and former Seattle Seahawks receiver is hearing it’s very, very possible.

GM Schneider discusses why Seahawks made DK Metcalf trade

Luckily for us, that analyst is one of our own. Michael Bumpus said yesterday during our show — Bump and Stacy — that he’s heard from a “reliable source” that Kupp has narrowed his list of teams to two, and one of them is the Seahawks. NFL insider Josina Anderson provided a positive update regarding Kupp and the Seahawks on Friday morning, and The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reports that he is expected to make his decision Friday.

Some Notes:

As of early this morning my understanding is that the #Seahawks are still holding out hope that the hometown connection plays into their favor with Cooper Kupp, per league sources. Kupp was born in Yakima, Washington.

Having the former standout Eastern Washington wide receiver back in the Evergreen state would be a welcome reunion. But… what does a 31-year-old Kupp bring now after being released by the Los Angeles Rams? Would it be a fit?

“He’s no longer a No. 1 receiver,” Bump said when asked about Kupp’s possible transition to Seattle’s offense. “We saw that last year with Puka Nacua (leading the Rams in receiving). The knock you’re going to hear about him now is that he can’t stay healthy, and that’s real.”

After a triple-crown season in 2021 that saw Kupp surpass 1,900 yards and win Super Bowl MVP, he has dealt with a number of injuries. He landed on injured reserve the following season with an ankle sprain that required surgery and finished the year with just nine starts. He began 2023 on IR with a hamstring issue that limited him to 12 games and 737 yards. He missed four weeks last season with another ankle injury and finished with 710 yards, the second-lowest total of his career.

Still, the Seahawks aren’t looking to Kupp to be WR1. They have that now with Jaxon Smith-Njigba. They’re looking for something else.

“I think we need to start talking about bridge receivers,” Bump said. “The guy that connects a young guy to a No. 1 receiver, or a guy like Marquez (Valdes-Scantling) to a No. 1 receiver. He can be exactly that.

“He still runs good routes. He’s never been a burner so his game kind of ages like fine wine, the same way I’ve described Davante Adams. But he can catch the football. He’s smart, he’s savvy, he’s great in the red zone. He’s still got some quickness to his game. At 31, you’ve got to knock on wood if you do sign him that he stays healthy, but he is a good No. 2, No. 3 bridge receiver that the Seahawks could use right now.”

More: Is WA native Cooper Kupp now a fit as Seahawks WR?

Bump isn’t the only one predicting Kupp to Seattle: Russini, Anderson, Daniel Jeremiah, Ian Rapoport and Peter Schrager have all listed Seattle as a fit.

FOX Sports NFC West reporter Eric Williams joined Bump and Stacy earlier this week to say the same — and he knows the Rams well. Asked whether Kupp has anything left and whether the Seahawks are a possible landing spot, Williams kept it simple:

“Yes and yes.”
