Rare Leicester City partnership gets Ruud van Nistelrooy backing ahead of Man United showdown

Ruud van Nistelrooy is backing Jamie Vardy and Patson Daka to be a twin threat against Manchester United this weekend, insisting they look like a natural strike partnership.

Vardy and Daka started together at Chelsea after van Nistelrooy opted to switch formations in search of a rare win.

It was just the third time in four years since Daka arrived at the King Power Stadium that he and Vardy have been in the same 11 together.

While City did not get the result they wanted at Stamford Bridge, van Nistelrooy felt the system change was a success, and it’s possible the duo line up together again on Sunday night.

There, they can use their movement and pace to help create space for each other, and hopefully get what would be City’s first home goal in seven Premier League matches.

“I think they did pretty well,” van Nistelrooy said, assessing the strikers as a pair. “It didn’t look like it was only the third time they played together. They looked pretty natural with their movements in different areas.

“What they did very well was one below the other. In a man-marking situation, they used the space behind the jumping centre-back and they have the speed to do so, so that’s a threat.

“There were also times when the centre-back couldn’t jump and then they were free and could link up to the third man, play forward from there and bring us higher up the pitch. I liked their movements, it looked really natural.”

Although van Nistelrooy was pleased with how City’s gameplan worked at Chelsea, his team only had three shots, the fewest they’ve mustered in a match all season.

Asked for specifics on how they could improve that number, having not scored a league goal home or away since late January, van Nistelrooy did not offer many details.

“You have to take into account that we played Chelsea at Stamford Bridge,” he said. “Within that context, they did really well. Developing this more can bring us into more chances.”
