Report: Newcastle want to sign the ‘next Wayne Rooney’ ahead of Tottenham for under £10m

Newcastle United fans are expecting a busy summer as Paul Mitchell puts his plans together.

There is no doubt the Magpies’ sporting director will be chomping at the bit ahead of the summer transfer window – he will finally be let of the leash and be given freedom to bring players to Tyneside.

Paul Mitchell didn’t make any signings in the January transfer window with Newcastle United hamstrung by PSR which has effectively forced their first-team squad to regress over the last year.

However, Newcastle’s positive financial accounts coupled with a £73m boost from hefty spending in previous years dropping off the FFP cycle means that the budget is there to make improvements.

Mitchell will sign younger players for Newcastle with the idea being that Howe will develop them into top class players in the future.

With a new strategy in place, a new report has linked Newcastle with a young attacker who is catching the eye of clubs around Europe.

Newcastle United eyeing move for Roony Bardghji

FC Copenhagen star Roony Bardghji has taken European football by storm since making his professional debut in 2022.

At 19, the Swede has made 78 appearances in all competitions, scoring 15 goals. The winger hasn’t made any appearances this season, however, as he continues recovering from an ACL injury he picked up in 2024.

According to GiveMeSport, Newcastle are rivalling Tottenham over a summer move for Bardghji. The Magpies will be in the market for a winger in the summer, with Bardghji a perfect match for Mitchell’s transfer strategy.

The 19-year-old was titled the ‘new Wayne Rooney’ by the Athletic, Bardghji would be doing something Rooney didn’t do by joining Newcastle.

The report also states that it would cost Newcastle less than £10m to sign Bardghji this summer as his contract expires at the end of 2025.

Should Bardghji join Newcastle, he would join with experience of playing in Europe. The Magpies are aiming for Champions League qualification at the end of the season and will be eager to add more players with experience of playing in Europe’s top competition.

Roony Bardghji recently linked up with Newcastle United star

Barghji has been missing since May 2024 with an ACL injury, a big blow for the young winger who must regain the momentum he had last season.

In the months after his surgery, he spent time recovering in Qatar where he linked-up with a Newcastle star who was also recovering from his own injury problems at the time.

Callum Wilson has struggled with injuries throughout his Newcastle career, even more so in the last 12 months. The striker missed a big chunk of the season with a hamstring problem which has halted his chances of breaking into the Magpies starting XI.

In November, Bardghji posted on his Instagram story a video of him playing head tennis with Wilson, leading some fans to believe that he could also be trying to convince him to move to Tyneside in the summer.

The summer looks set to be a positive one for Newcastle, with Mitchell expected to add more bodies for Howe’s squad.
