Dubai: Worshippers at the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina are now experiencing enhanced comfort during prayer times, as 250 state-of-the-art automated umbrellas have been installed across the mosque’s sprawling courtyards, providing essential shade and cooling in the city’s often harsh climate.
The towering umbrellas, which open and close automatically, aim to improve the experience of visitors at one of Islam’s holiest sites.
Designed with both utility and architectural harmony in mind, the structures reflect the mosque’s traditional aesthetic while offering modern engineering solutions to withstand year-round weather conditions.
Collectively, the new installations can shelter more than 228,000 worshippers in the mosque’s outdoor prayer zones. Each umbrella stands 22 meters tall and spans 25.5 by 25.5 meters, incorporating two overlapping sections that fold in unison when not in use.
The structures feature glass-reinforced carbon fiber arms adorned with mosaic-style detailing, a nod to Islamic art and design. Despite their elegant appearance, each unit weighs approximately 40 tons and houses 436 misting fans to circulate cool air across the crowded courtyards. At night, over 1,000 integrated lighting units ensure the spaces remain fully illuminated for evening prayers and activities.
With space beneath each umbrella accommodating over 900 worshippers, the project is designed to significantly expand shaded areas for outdoor prayers, particularly valuable during Ramadan and the summer months.
