Matchday Memories: On This Day 1975 – Sky Blues & Foxes Share Spoils (Ta ‘Fergie’ & ‘Greeny’)

On this day (March 15th) in 1975 Sky Blue Manager Gordon Milne‘s men took on Midland rivals Leicester City in a Division One game in front of a Highfield Road crowd of well over 20,000.

The Foxes were seeking revenge after the Sky Blues came away with a 1-0 win at Filbert Street the previous September courtesy an 86th minute goal from now CCFPA member (and CBS Arena regular) Jimmy Holmes. However, Sky Blues Scottish stars Willie Carr and Colin Stein (both also now CCFPA members) had previously gone for £185k to balance the books. The Foxes had former Sky Blue (and now CCFPA member) Jeff Blockley in the heart of their defence.

Mick Ferguson

Hopes were high for a double when diminutive forward Alan Green slotted home in the ninth minute from a cross from another Scot Brian Alderson. However, it was the away team that went into the interval with a 2-1 lead with two goals in a minute (24 and 25 minutes) from Frank Worthington and Bob Lee.

An early second half goal from the Sky Blues Mick Ferguson with a towering header on 48 minutes from a cross from (yet another Scottish Sky Blue) Tommy Hutchison saved the draw for CCFC.

Hopes for a win did not materialise as the Foxes probably had the best of the muddy struggle. Both sets of fans among the 23,160 crowd probably went home disappointed.
