The Angel of the North dons Newcastle United shirt ahead of Carabao Cup Final
The Angel of the North has joined the thousands of Newcastle fans who will be donning their Newcastle United shirts this weekend for the Carabao Cup Final at Wembley.
Fans travelling on the A1 on Saturday morning were greeted with a sight of the famous landmark wearing a huge Newcastle United flag over its body, which has been printed to look like a Toon shirt. On the back the flag reads 'Tell Me Ma' above the number 25 to represent the year the club has reached the final.
A similar display appeared on the Angel back in 2023 on the weekend the Toon Army headed to London to see the Magpies take on Manchester United in the Carabao Cup Final. A giant Newcastle United flag emblazoned with the words NUFC, 'Howay The Lads' and '2023 Wembley' was spotted hanging from the wings of the Gateshead artwork.
At the time the 'culprits' appeared to reveal themselves with a message on X, formally Twitter. Wor Flags, whose fan-funded flag displays are hugely popular, took a snap on the Angel with a message saying: "A leaving present from us. On to Wembley. Howay the Lads!"
And this year Wor Flags were once again quick to share a snap of the newly-adorned Angel on the social media platform the message "Tell Me Ma", to which Newcastle United responded "Thank you for your support" followed by black and white heart emojis.

The club was just one of the many people to respond, with one person writing: "Hope it's there all day! Will be driving past at 12:30 on our way." Another added: "Come on the toon".
Antony Gormley's sculpture, which is more than 65ft tall, has been claimed as a NUFC fan several times throughout its 27 years in the North East.

Back in 1998 fans used catapults and fishing wire to hoist an Angel-size replica of Alan Shearer's number nine shirt over it in a stunt which was captured on camera before officials could remove it.
The Angel has also worn a Santa hat at Christmas 2018. Dressing up the Angel is no mean feat given its height and structure and it is thought the unnamed group involved in the Santa hat used abseiling equipment, throwing ropes over the wings, to pull themselves up as photographs later emerged showing silhouettes in the darkness balancing on the wings to secure the hat in place.
