Thomas Tuchel namechecked Jacob Ramsey as a player who was close to being included in his first England squad.
The Aston Villa midfielder is yet to receive his maiden senior call-up having featured regularly for the England Under-21s before his 22nd birthday at the start of last year.
After breaking a metatarsal in the U21 European Championships in the summer of 2023, Ramsey missed the start of last season and then large chunks of the campaign as he struggled to stay fit.
This season has been a different story and Ramsey has impressed, making 33 appearances and 19 starts in all competitions so far. With eight goal contributions so far this term, new England boss Tuchel has been keeping a watchful eye on him.
Tuchel named his England squad on Friday morning and included three Villa players; Marcus Rashford, Morgan Rogers and Ezri Konsa, but Ollie Watkins wasn’t involved having reportedly agreed with the Three Lions boss to rest during the international break due to injury.
Speaking about the difficulty of choosing a squad, Tuchel told talkSPORT: “There are some tough ones, with the likes of James Maddison, Gibbs-White and also Jacob Ramsey.
“I am sure that I miss out now only players who were also close. Very close calls. They were all disappointed, but it was important to bring the message in person.
Tuchel added: “There is huge competition in positions and every player understands that. The nice feeling I got from the calls was that every player knows they have to be on their top level to make the cut.”
