Tottenham could lose a key player this summer according to one report.

Tottenham have been handed a fresh transfer concern with a defender being eyed by the biggest club in world football. Spurs have endured a season to forget, solely relying on the Europa League as a possible route to European football next season at this point.

Ange Postecoglou’s men are in the bottom half of the Premier League having struggled to deal with an almost unprecedented number of injuries, and they will already have one eye on next season, at least at the top level.

Postecoglou can’t afford to look too far ahead, fighting for his job at this stage, with the Europa League now vitally important to his future. But on some level, the club will already be preparing for next season, assessing potential targets with a clear need for more quality and depth.

Incomings will be the main concern, but there is also talk of exits, and there will be concern over a rumour of Real Madrid expressing an interest in star defender Cristian Romero. Like many, Romero has struggled with injury this season, but he is unquestionably one of Tottenham’s most important players.

According to Fichajes, Real Madrid are eyeing Romero as a possible option as they look to make a statement centre-back signing this summer. Los Blancos have addressed other areas over the last couple of seasons, landing the likes of Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe and others, but they have been left short at the back.

Eder Militao and David Alaba have struggled with injury this season, and looking further ahead, Alaba and key defender Antonio Rudiger is out of contract in the summer of 2026. Those factors have made a defensive signing vital this season, and Romero is now said to be an option, valued at £54.7million by Transfermarkt.

Real Madrid have also been heavily linked with Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes in recent times, but the Brazilian is not realistically gettable unless he himself decides to throw his toys out of the pram. Gabriel is happy under Mikel Arteta and under contract until 2027, and that’s beyond the fact he is seen as a vital part of Arsenal’s starting XI.

That will force Real Madrid to look elsewhere, and Romero is said to be an option along with Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah and Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite. Romero is currently under contract until 2027 and Tottenham will not want to lose him.
