Former professional NBA star Dwyane Wade and his wife, Gabrielle Union, are certainly in a good place. The two have been together since 2009, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t had their share of difficult times. While Union and Wade were on a brief break, he fathered a child with another woman.

Although Wade and Union have since moved past the situation, Union once revealed that she probably would have left him years ago if she were the same woman she is today.

Gabrielle Union had a hard time forgiving Dwyane Wade for his mistake

Union and Wade first met back in 2007, and they started officially dating in 2009. But by 2013, the two were having difficulties seeing each other with their different schedules. It ultimately led them to take a break, and during that time, Wade fathered a child with another woman. But what the public didn’t know at that point was that Union had been having fertility struggles — and when she learned Wade had fathered a child with ease, it tore her up.

In the first chapter of her 2021 memoir, Union dives right into the difficulty of watching her ex — who she eventually got back with and married — have a baby while the two were on a break. And she revealed that, if the situation had happened today, she wouldn’t be with him.

“The me of today would not have stayed with him, but would I be who I am now without that pain?” Union writes. “That fiery explosion that created life and light?”

Instead, Union revealed what she actually would have told herself. “The advice I would give myself now would be to leave. ‘You don’t have to do this. You don’t think you have an option, but you do. Save yourself.’”

Essence later asked Union why she wrote such words in her book. Her answer was simple: “It’s the truth.”

Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade are still going strong

Just because Union still thinks about what she went through with her now-husband doesn’t mean she doesn’t still love him. In 2018, she and Wade welcomed a child via surrogate; she opened up in 2017 about her fertility struggles.

These days, Wade and Union keep their marriage strong in simple ways. They make time for each other, and she told Sherri Shepherd that they “don’t mess around” with their “TV time.” Union emphasized that she and Wade love watching My Lottery Dream Home. While Union and Wade have struggled in the past, it seems that she has also grown from the experience and continues to stand beside her man.
