'Last season': Julian Alvarez agent 'confirms' Liverpool wanted to sign him and looks ahead to the future

Liverpool look all set to be in the market for new forward players during the summer of 2025.

The Reds have plenty of firepower within their squad, but appear likely to refresh their options at the end of the season.

Primarily, Liverpool have a need for a new central striker, with Darwin Nunez likely to be sold.

And although Rousing The Kop understands that Diogo Jota is unlikely to follow Nunez out of the door, Arne Slot clearly wants something different through the middle of his attack.

Slot chose to press ahead with his existing options after joining last summer, but after one year of rotation between Nunez, Jota and Luis Diaz, the Liverpool head coach is ready to take action.

According to new quotes from the agent of Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, though, Slot may actually have been trying to sort things out 12 months ago.

Julian Alvarez agent confirms Liverpool interest

Quite what Slot wants from his ideal centre-forward at Liverpool remains to be seen.

There have been strong links with Alexander Isak, but there’s a possibility that the Dutch coach wants someone with a little more creativity, too.

As per agent Fernando Hidalgo, what Slot actually wanted was Alvarez, who left Man City for Atletico last summer.

Speaking to winwin.com, Hidalgo has confirmed that Liverpool were keen on signing his client as he departed City.

“I confirm that Liverpool were interested in Julian last season,” he says.

“As for the future, it’s not the right time to talk about it, because Julian is participating in important tournaments and is fully focused on them.”

Alvarez would have been a good fit at Liverpool

It is perhaps a surprise to hear that Liverpool were attempting an audacious move for Alvarez from City last year.

However, on closer inspection, the World Cup winner would clearly fit nicely into the Liverpool squad. He’s essentially an improvement on Jota.

Having said that, it would now seem incredibly unlikely that the Reds would be able to prise Alvarez away from Atletico.

The 25-year-old cost the Spaniards an enormous fee last summer and it’s difficult to see why they’d part with him just one season on.

If there is a chance the door remains open, then maybe we see Liverpool try again. For now, though, this one seems to be in the past.
