Liverpool manager Arne Slot is reportedly in regular contact with Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong, which could open the door for a summer transfer at the end of the season.
Frimpong has not been short of suitors over the past 12 months, with Manchester City and Manchester United among a host of clubs who are said to have shortlisted the wingback as a potential target this summer.
Of the trio, who are all set to become free agents at the end of the season as it stands, Alexander-Arnold appears to be the likeliest candidate to depart. The England international has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid, who have become experts in acquiring the services of the very best free agents – like Kylian Mbappe most recently.
If Alexander-Arnold does depart, a right-back is expected to be at the top of Liverpool’s shopping list over the summer. Conor Bradley remains a replacement option with a big future on Merseyside, but Slot may have his heart set on bringing in Frimpong if a vacancy emerges.
The Netherlands international has a release clause worth £33.7million in his contract with Bayer Leverkusen, and it remains to be seen whether the fee would be a stumbling block in negotiations with Liverpool.
The Reds could find themselves needing three key players replaced if their worst-case scenario unfolds and therefore such a significant outlay on Frimpong could prove too pricey given that Bradley has shown that he is capable of playing in Slot’s system.
Joe Gomez and Wataru Endo have also both played at right-back when required, though the duo are also fringe players and could be cashed in on to fund other incomings.
