The big screen displays news that the VAR (Video Assistant Referee) is reviewing a possible penalty to Everton, not given during the English Premier League football match between Everton and West Ham United at Goodison Park

Everton were denied a penalty for the second consecutive home game. The Blues thought they had a late chance to seize control of an even affair when Beto crumpled to the ground under pressure from West Ham United defender Maximilian Kilman.

Referee Darren Bond pointed to the spot but overturned his original call after VAR intervened.

He left the pitch to boos from the home crowd, which had been similarly incensed by the controversial decision to disallow a spot kick in the final stages of the draw with Manchester United when Everton last played at home.

The Premier League’s matchday communications service confirmed its decision on X, formerly Twitter, explaining: “VAR checked the referee’s call of penalty to Everton for a challenge by Kilman on Beto – and deemed that no foul was committed, therefore recommended an on-field review. The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with a drop ball.”

A tame first-half ended goalless after Jordan Pickford made good saves from a Jarrad Branthwaite header sent towards his own goal and a dipping Jarrod Bowen half-volley. Visiting keeper Alphonse Areola had pushed a fierce Jake O’Brien strike wide at the other end.
