Report: Two clubs want to sign Man Utd defender that Erik ten Hag labelled'important'this summer, he's expected to leave

Manchester United are set for a busy summer with plenty of work needing to be done on Ruben Amorim’s squad.

It will be the most important summer in a long time for Manchester United, with the team needing serious strengthening after this season’s troubles.

Ruben Amorim has been competing with a squad of 11 senior players for the past month or so, due to half of his squad being injured.

It is therefore anticipated that this summer will see a clear-out for United, which is long overdue and will see plenty of incomings and outgoings.

There are several young talents being eyed up by United, which would be aimed at replacing the older and higher-wage players at Old Trafford.

There are already four United players expected to leave this summer, with a handful of contracts entering their final stages, none of which are in Amorim’s plans.

Jonny Evans wanted by Championship sides

Amorim’s system is unique and requires three central defenders, which has seen the position look like a priority for the summer.

United’s need to strengthen in the centre of defence will only grow with the impending exits of Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof.

According to the Birmingham World, Evans is now attracting serious interest with Championship outfits West Brom and Sheffield United keen on the 37-year-old.

Evans’ £50,000-a-week wage expires in June and the chances of a new deal seem to be practically at zero per cent.

The Northern Ireland international has played just twice for United under Amorim and not since December. Since then, Ayden Heaven has emerged as a better player and there is no need for Evans to get an extension.

Jonny Evans type signings won’t happen under Ineos’ management

United re-signing Evans seemed to be a smart deal at the time, but in hindsight, it was something the club should never have been doing.

The academy graduate was not good enough for the level the Red Devils would be aiming for, despite Erik ten Hag being a fan of the stalwart.

Ten Hag was a big fan of Evans, telling United club media as much last season.

“As you see, his performance across the season, he’s such an important player for this squad. [He will] always be there when he’s needed and give good performances.”

Instead of signing Evans for free, the club from now on will be looking at deals like Heaven for just £1.5m, on cheap wages and who will already have seen his value explode by around 1000 per cent.
