What Wolves fans could be heard chanting at full-time after securing vital win over Southampton

Wolves took a giant step towards securing Premier League survival with a vital three points against Southampton at St Mary’s.

An excellent header from Jorgen Strand Larsen, assisted by Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, opened the scoring for Vitor Pereira’s men in the first half.

Strand Larsen then doubled his tally in the game at the start of the second period, sweeping the ball past Aaron Ramsdale after being assisted by Bellegarde once more.

Southampton did find the net 15 minutes from time through Paul Onuachu, making it a nervy end to the game for the visitors but they managed to hold on for a massive three points.

With Ipswich losing 4-2 against Nottingham Forest, Pereira’s men moved nine points clear of the bottom three and Wolves fans now believe they’ve secured their status for another campaign.

What the Wolves fans were chanting from the away end at St Mary’s

At the start of the campaign, some were resigned to Wolves being relegated to the Championship. Gary O’Neil had taken two wins from his first 16 games this term, resulting in him being sacked.

In came Pereira, who had a huge challenge on his hands to drag the Old Gold to safety. But a return of five wins from 13 league games, including Wolves latest 2-1 victory over Southampton, means survival is firmly in their hands.

Joe Cole thinks Wolves will avoid relegation, and now they’ve pulled nine points clear, the fans also believe they will remain in the top-flight.

How many more points do Wolves need to secure survival

Survival isn’t mathematically secure but it would take an almighty collapse for Wolves to fumble their Premier League status.

Usually, attaining 40 points is enough to stay above the dotted line. Though, given the lack of quality at the bottom this term, just another three wins from nine games would likely be enough.

Wolves are already nine points clear of the bottom three, and with fixtures to come against West Ham and Ipswich, they could easily register more points on the board.

On current form, it’s hard to see Leicester and Ipswich putting together an incredible run to climb out of the bottom, with all three promoted clubs destined for the drop.
