David Ornstein feels West Ham United fans have enough reasons to be excited as the club prepare for their first summer transfer window under Graham Potter and Kyle Macaulay.

Having steered 16 points clear of the relegation zone, West Ham are no longer under immediate threat of dropping down to the Championship.

Meanwhile, any other achievements also appear out of the Irons’ reach as they sit 16th in the Premier League, meaning they can already look ahead to next season.

Potter will be determined to bolster his ranks in what will be his first summer transfer window as the West Ham head coach, although there are suggestions they may have to be ‘creative’ in the market.

Ornstein rubbished West Ham ‘sell to buy’ claims

There are claims that West Ham may have to sell players before they can buy new ones, having committed to making Jean-Clair Todibo’s loan move from OGC Nice permanent for £32million on top of their spending spree last year.

However, Ornstein is not aware of the East London outfit being in such a situation as he believes they are still in a healthy position financially, albeit due to their favourable rental terms for the London Stadium.

The Athletic journalist is expecting a “fascinating” summer transfer window for the Hammers under Potter and Macaulay, while they may be joined by new appointments in the sporting and recruitment departments.

“I’ve not heard they’re in a ‘Sell to buy’ position, especially given their financial health (heavily aided by the stadium, of course)”, Ornstein wrote in a Q&A on the Athletic website (14 March).

“It will be the first off-season for head coach Graham Potter and head of recruitment Kyle Macaulay.

“Let’s also see if the club add to their sporting and recruitment setup. It should be a fascinating window at the London Stadium.”

Potter to sign new striker

Ornstein is positive that West Ham will be active this summer as they have always been.

The reliable journalist has also hinted at the possibility of Potter prioritising the signing of a new striker, with Evan Ferguson’s loan deal running out in May and Michail Antonio also leaving as a free agent as things stand.

Apart from the aforementioned players, Danny Ings has his contract expiring at the end of the season as well, meaning the Irons will be left with injury-prone Niclas Fullkrug as their only senior striker.
