Several weeks after the establishment of the first European colony in what is now Massachusetts, a Native American man walked into the settlement and proclaimed "Welcome, Englishmen" on March 16, 1621.
The announcement was startling to the Pilgrims, who believed they were the first Europeans in that part of North America.
As it turns out, British fishermen had been coming to the region for years, setting up camp and getting to know the locals.
Samoset greeted the Pilgrims upon arrival then asked them if they had any beer.
