Cowboys Debate Stephon Gilmore vs. Rasul Butler

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys could sit tight at the cornerback position with the hope that DaRon Bland will continue to emerge as a star, with the hope that Trevon Diggs' injury rehab will go smoothly, and with the hope that new, cheap trade pickup Kaiir Elam from the Buffalo Bills will realize his potential once he dons The Star.

Or ...

Buffalo veteran cornerback Rasul Douglas remains a free agent after a two-year run with the Bills as the former third-round pick looks for work. He's not alone - Mike Hilton, Asante Samuel, Jeff Okudah and Kendall Fuller are among the many corners still on the shelf - but we're intrigued by what Douglas is when he's on his game. ...

And we also have a high opinion of an old friend in two-time All-Pro, Stephon Gilmore.

So we will do the debate, for now, this way: Assuming Dallas isn't done trying to beef up the cornerback room ...

How about Douglas vs. Gilmore?

Gilmore was a former first-round pick of the Bills in 2012, Gilmore spent the first five seasons of his career in Buffalo, where he developed into one of the better cornerbacks in the NFL. In 2019, he was named as a former Defensive Player of the Year as a member of the New England Patriots.

He landed in Dallas via trade two years ago, but a year ago, when the "Blow It Up'' plan was initiated, there was no need to give a multi-year contract to a player who will be 35 in the fall.

But what about now?

The Cowboys locker room loves Gilmore, who has been a class act throughout his career. (See below.)

We're not sure if Dallas has designs on signing one more vet ... but the options as guys who offer a veteran presence exist. Gilmore vs. Douglas should be part of that debate.
