The 33-year-old defender was close to a renewal back in November with his representatives telling interested parties that he was no longer available.

That was seen as an encouraging sign for Liverpool fans, who could safely assume official confirmation of a new contract was coming.

However things have been quiet on the renewal front and in recent weeksrival clubs have begun to believe they can seek out a dealfor Van Dijk once again.

Van Dijk future in doubt

Al Hilal are reported to have come forward with a £16.7 million annual contract offerwhile several teams in Europe are also reported to be interested.

Among the listed teams have been Real Madrid and Barcelona but Van Dijk set tongues wagging midweek when he was spotted in talks with a different European super club.

Following Liverpool’s elimination to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, the Dutch defender was photographed talking to Nasser Al-Khelaifi - the PSG president - and club director Luis Campos.

The talks took place in the bowels of the Anfield stadium, with PSG’s players were still in their dressing room after the penalty shootout victory.

What was said has been subject to much speculation and now French media has confirmed what was on the agenda.

What Van Dijk said to PSG bosses

According to RMC Sport, Van Dijk first wanted to apologise for shouting “It’s not Ligue 1 bro!” at Campos at half-time during the last-16 first leg at the Parc des Princes.

That occurred when the Portuguese official was asking for either a red card or a penalty for Ibrahima Konate following an incident involving Bradley Barcola.

Van Dijk was also keen to stress to the PSG family that not only were Luis Enrique’s team the best Liverpool had faced this season but the best team they’d played in the last THREE YEARS. That’s high praise indeed.

So Liverpool fans can rest a little easier on that front. There were no brazen contract talks taking place right inside the Reds’ home stadium. However, until the signature is on his Liverpool deal, there will be reason to be uneasy.
