Fabian Schar is loving life at Newcastle United and is open to signing a new deal at the club to prolong his stay at St James Park.
Fabian Schar has been a brilliant buy for Newcastle United. The Swiss defender arrived in a 4 million deal in 2018 from Deportivo La Coruna, and while he took his time in settling down, the 33-year-old is certainly one of the main stars under Eddie Howe.
Schar has been a defensive mainstay in Howe’s sides over the last few years, as the manager had been pushing for a new deal earlier in the season. The club have yet to act on their ideas for new deals, which does leave them a bit vulnerable with experienced stars like Schar.
Schar’s current agreement ends at the end of the season, as replacing him would be another big task as well as an expensive one. The 33-year-old might be on the wrong side of the age spectrum, but Schar has not shown any signs of slowing down, starting all but one of the 24 games he played in the Premier League.
Speaking to Blick, Schar has revealed his desire to stay put at the club and sign a new deal. He did concede the factor about his age, although he did not state the game is beginning to pass him by. While expressing his love for England and Newcastle as a city in particular, this is what Schar said about his future.
Schar said, “We’ll see in the next few weeks. At 33, you’re no longer the youngest – especially in the Premier League. Considering the current situation, I can generally assume that we’ll find a good fit.”
“I have certain wishes. We need to discuss whether my vision aligns with the club’s. That might be the most likely point to discuss.”
“We’ll certainly sit down together soon and see how things proceed. From a sporting perspective, everything’s fine for me. It would be in my best interest to extend his time in the Premier League with Newcastle.”
Schar was thrown into the mix in a big way earlier this season when Newcastle United started the campaign without the likes of Sven Botman and Jamal Lascelles. However, he has continued to show his worth, as Newcastle United have been thinking about a new contract lately.
The 33-year-old does view himself as a top professional and could decide on his future in the summer. For now, he will continue to harbour hopes of staying put in the Premier League with Newcastle United, as a new contract might come his way in the coming months.
