Liverpool are preparing for the possible departure of Virgil Van Dijk, and according to reports, the club has set its sights on Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo as a long-term replacement.
Van Dijk’s contract expires at the end of the season, and recent reports suggest he has rejected an extension at Anfield. The Dutch defender is reportedly seeking a fresh challenge, with Bayern Munich emerging as his likely destination next season. While Liverpool haven’t given up hope of keeping their captain, they are said to be exploring alternative options, with Ronald Araujo standing out as a prime candidate.
Can Ronald Araujo Fill Van Dijk’s Shoes?
Araujo signed a contract extension with Barcelona last month that runs until 2031 and the new deal has a revised €65 million release clause that becomes active this summer. With Liverpool set to lose Van Dijk on a free transfer, paying this fee for a top-tier replacement could make a lot of sense.
Since joining Barcelona in 2018, Araujo has made over 150 appearances for the club and was a key figure in their defense last season – featuring in 37 matches. However, injuries have plagued his current campaign where he has played only 11 matches, missing over 22 games due to a hamstring issue. Just like VVD, Ronald Araujo is also a commanding figure at the back and is a proper leader. He has a great understanding of the game and his ball-playing skills can be very helpful in allowing Liverpool play out from the back.
Given his experience at the highest level, signing him for around €65 million would be a bargain compared to paying some absurd amount for an unknown talent.
Will Barcelona Let the Uruguayan Leave?
Barcelona’s financial struggles continue to hinder their transfer strategy, and with Hansi Flick successfully adjusting his team without Ronald Araujo, a summer sale could be very much on the cards.
While the defender’s recent contract renewal indicates that Barca aren’t in a rush to sell him, the club’s financial situation means they could be open to negotiations. Araujo’s release clause will increase to €80 million in January 2026, meaning this summer will be Liverpool’s best chance to sign him at a reasonable price.
If Liverpool are willing to offer around €70-75 million, Barcelona may find the deal too good to turn down, especially if Flick is confident in his defensive alternatives.
