49ers Trade Christian McCaffrey Backup in Shocking Strip-Down

The San Francisco 49ers continued their salary dump on Saturday night as they sent running back Jordan Mason to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round draft choice. The teams will also exchange sixth-round picks in next month's draft.

San Francisco will receive Minnesota's pick, No. 160 and surrender their pick, No. 187 to the Vikings to complete the trade.

Further, Mason agreed to terms with the Vikings on a new two-year deal worth up to $12 million. Mason will be guaranteed $7 million under the terms of the new agreement.

Mason, originally an undrafted free agent from Georgia Tech in 2022, emerged as the 49ers lead back last season as Christian McCaffrey was out with an Achilles tendon injury to begin the season. Mason rushed for 789 yards on 153 carries in only six games before McCaffrey returned to the lineup.

Mason was under contract with the 49ers for one more year at $5.346 million before the trade. He was an exclusive rights free agent, who accepted the second-round tender last week.

The 49ers will not have any dead money count against the cap under the terms of the trade.

ESPN's Adam Schefter was the first to report the news of the trade after receiving confirmation from Mason's agents, Jason and Michael Katz of Katz Brothers Sports.

Mason will be paired with Aaron Jones, who returns to the Vikings on a two-year, $20 million contract he signed last week, according to spotrac.com.

The Vikings have been very active this offseason as they have either re-signed or acquired 12 players to further improve a team which went 14-3 last season.

Mason and Jones will have an easier time running behind the Vikings improved offensive line. The Vikings added free agent center Ryan Kelly and right guard Will Fries. Those two contracts alone total $107 million.
