West Ham reportedly have competition as they look to land a bargain midfielder.

West Ham have been handed a blow in their reported bid to land a bargain deal for an England international this summer. The Hammers will be on a mission to improve this summer when Graham Potter will get his chance to put his own stamp on his squad.

Potter was in charge for the January window, but that window is a notoriously hard window to do business in and an expensive one at that, meaning it was no surprise that West Ham decided to wait until the summer to make significant moves.

A number of players have been linked as Potter looks to shape his squad, using what he will have learned between now and the end of the campaign, and one of the more credible links involves Lille midfielder Angel Gomes. The former Manchester United midfielder is out of contract this summer and in the market for a new club having turned down advances at his current club.

Gomes is said to be a serious targets of West Ham’s, with numerous reports claiming that talks have already been held. Gomes is already free to agree a pre-contract, but it does look as though he will wait until the end of the season to make his decision.

But according to Give Me Sport,Tottenham have now entered the picture, and it’s claimed there have been ‘lengthy conversations’ as the North London club look to steal a march on their London rivals. The four-time England international was always likely to be an attractive prospect this summer given how he has proved himself since leaving United and making more than 100 league appearances for Lille over the last four years.

Meanwhile, Tottenham do need more depth in most areas of their squad, and so their interest does make sense. West Ham may need to step up their game and dust off the chequebook if they want to win the race to sign a rare England international free agent. After all, it was always going to be a case of spending big on wages to win the race given there will be no fee involved, and Gomes’ representatives will be well aware of that, with increased interest helping their client increase his future earnings.
