Newcastle United players huddle prior to kick off
Newcastle United have taken a strong squad to Wembley for today's Carabao Cup final with Liverpool. Eddie Howe may be without three key players for the huge showdown, but can still turn to plenty of talent when making his team selection.
Sven Botman, Lewis Hall and Anthony Gordon are ruled out, of course, with the latter serving the second of a three-match suspension following his red card against Brighton. Jamaal Lascelles is another long-term absentee as he recovers from keen surgery.
However,, the Magpies have included a mix of international talent, experience and exciting prospects in the squad this weekend. United are already in the capital, of course, and will make the short journey to Wembley today.
All eyes will be on in-form striker Alexander Isak, with the Swede already boasting a good record against Liverpool, while the midfield of Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton must be on song to stop Arne Slot's side from dictating the game.
Tino Livramento is likely to be given the job of stopping Mo Salah - although it will have to be a team effort to keep the Liverpool talisman quiet. United have players with Wembley experience, of course, not least Kieran Trippier, who has starred in the famous stadium on many ocasions for England.
There will also be some youth in the squad, with academy stars Ben Parkinson and Sean Neave included in the party. Neave was an unused substitute in the 1-0 win over West Ham last Monday night.
Howe spoke about the tight-knit squad on Friday ahead of the game, saying: "Genuinely, whenever I look at a team selection for any game, there's always decisions to make. That'll be no different for this game because you're always looking at the opposition and your own strengths and trying to figure out what players need to go up against certain players.
"So that's what we've done. We don't have a huge pool of players to select from - that's pretty obvious. We have a very tight squad and in some senses that can help you in different moments and that can also be a negative."
