Report: Manchester United simply wouldn't match one Chelsea clause in race to sign Geovany Quenda

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim would be forgiven for feeling a little disappointed after one transfer development.

Premier League action takes full focus for Manchester United once again on Sunday afternoon.

United beat Real Sociedad 4-1 on Thursday night, advancing into the last eight of the Europa League.

Ruben Amorim shifts his focus back to the Premier League with United hosting Leicester City on Sunday.

This game sees Ruud van Nistelrooy return to Old Trafford and Amorim will be keen to build on that European success.

Amorim may though be a little disappointed after seeing United miss out on signing a player he loves.

Manchester United missed out on Geovany Quenda

Summer signings may not be the top priority right now but United were seemingly keen on one addition.

Sporting star Geovany Quenda has been heavily linked with United ever since Amorim left the Lisbon club for Old Trafford.

Amorim is a fan of Quenda having given the teenager his first-team debut at Sporting.

A left footed, right-sided wide man who can play as a winger or as a wing back, Quenda has been likened to Bukayo Saka.

Reports in February suggested that United had agreed personal terms for Quenda with a £33million summer deal lined up.

United fans have been left stunned though as Chelsea have now landed Quenda, agreeing a deal and completing medical checks.

Quenda is now London-bound and reporter Ben Jacobs has shared just why Chelsea had the upper hand in this race.

Jacobs has noted that Chelsea were willing to let Quenda spend the whole of next season on loan at Sporting and continue developing before heading to Stamford Bridge in 2026.

United were not willing to match that clause and that ultimately made Chelsea’s offer a little more enticing for Sporting.

The 17-year-old is clearly viewed as one for the future at Chelsea but United wanted Quenda to come in and make an impact right away.

Ineos just aren’t in a position to spend considerable money on a teenager to just send him on loan next season, so Quenda won’t be heading to United after all.

Manchester United had ‘different’ plans to Chelsea

Jacobs also notes that United had slightly different ideas about Quenda’s position moving forward.

United were ‘impressed’ with Quenda’s defensive qualities and believed that he would be a wing back moving forward.

Amorim picked Quenda as a wing back at Sporting and seemingly wanted to do the same again in Manchester.

On the other hand, Chelsea pitched to Quenda that he would be a winger going forward with the Blues viewing him as being able to play on either flank.

This proposal – coupled with Sporting’s preference for Chelsea – appears to have done the deal in an early blow for United ahead of the summer window.

United have already eyed Roger Fernandes of Braga as a Quenda alternative and may well need to focus on signing him now.
