How much the two Manchester clubs have earned in Europe so far this season.
While the Champions League will forever be the promised land of European tournaments, other competitions also provide plenty of opportunities to earn handsomely based on club performances.
The further a team reaches, the better the rewards, which is why European football is a main goal for top flight sides. But just how much money is on offer for successful clubs this season?
We’ve crunched the numbers and taken a look at how much Manchester United and Manchester City have banked from their pursuits so far this campaign. While the Red Devils continue to move forward in the Europa League, Pep Guardiola’s side failed to progress to the Champions League after losing 6-3 on aggregate to Real Madrid in the play-offs.
The newly structured league phases of the two European tournaments saw some surprise results, including the likes of City, Madrid and PSG finish outside of the Champions League automatic qualification spots.
Manchester United Europa League prize money
Man United have earned their spot in the Europa League quarter-finals after seeing off Real Sociedad. After a 1-1 draw in San Sebastián, Ruben Amorim’s side bagged four goals at Old Trafford through a Bruno Fernandes hat-trick and late Diogo Dalot effort to hammer the nail into the coffin.
The current prize money on offer in the Europa League is broken down into stages. As is expected, the longer a team lasts in the tournament, the more cash they will earn. Here’s what’s on offer at each stage.
As per UEFA, the 36 clubs that qualify for the league phase can expect an allocation of €4.31 million (£3.6m), split into a down-payment of €4.14 million (£3.4m) and a balance of €170,000 (£143k). The rest is as follows:
Europa League winner: €13 million (£10.95m)
Runner-up: €7m (£5.90m)
Semi-finalists: €4.2m (£3.54m)
Quarter-finalists: €2.5m (£2.11m)
Round of 16: €1.75m (£1.47m)

League-phase wins: €450,000 (£379,201)
League-phase draws: €150,000 (£126,400)
Man United’s Europa League earnings so far, as quarter-finalists with five league phase wins and three draws: £9.35 million
Manchester City Champions League prize money
City’s run in the Champions League came to a close before reaching the knockouts. After scraping a top 24 finish on goal difference, the Citizens came up against Real Madrid for a place in the last 16.
A five-goal thriller at the Etihad left it wide open for the second leg but Los Blancos enjoyed a strong display on home soil. A 3-1 win thanks to a Kylian Mbappe hat-trick put Madrid into the knockouts and dumped City from the competition.
Here’s a breakdown of the Champions League prize pot per round, and how much City will have pocketed for their efforts.
The 36 clubs in the league phase can expect an allocation of €18.62 million (£15.6m), split into a down-payment of €17.87 million (£15m) and a balance of €750,000 (£631,530). A play-off elimination is an additional €4.29 million (£3.6m). The rest is as follows:
