Liverpool and Manchester United are by some distance the most successful clubs in English football, enjoying periods of domination in the top flight and plenty of success in European competition.

Under Arne Slot, Liverpool look in good shape to add more trophies to their enviable cabinet, building on Jurgen Klopp's memorable spell in charge of the club.

Manchester United, meanwhile, are enduring a more tumultuous period after the arrival of Ruben Amorim, although The Red Devils have still added a couple of domestic honours in recent years.

But which club has won more trophies overall? We have taken a closer look.

League titles

-------------

There is not much to separate Liverpool and Manchester United in terms of league titles. The Red Devils have the slight edge at present, with **20** to their name, although the most recent was way back in 2012/13, Sir Alex Ferguson's final season at the club.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have won **19** league titles, the last of which was in 2019/20 under Klopp. Before that, The Reds had not won the league since 1989/90, and the glory years of the 70s and 80s had become a distant memory. The celebrations for that long-awaited first Premier League title were muted, disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, but Liverpool look set to draw level with United on 20 league titles this season.

Manchester United have not been as successful in the League Cup, with just **six** to their name. They beat Newcastle 2-0 in the 2023 final and won the competition in 2017 under Jose Mourinho, with a Zlatan Ibrahimovic brace helping them to a 3-2 victory over Southampton.

Liverpool's European Cup record is a proud one: no club in the country has won more than their **six** titles. Bob Paisley inspired the club to three in the 1970s and 80s, before Joe Fagan guided his team to another in 1984. Finally, Klopp brought European glory back to Merseyside with a Champions League title in 2019.

Manchester United have won **three** European Cup/Champions League titles. The first was in 1968, under the guidance of the legendary Matt Busby, who oversaw a 4-1 win against Benfica in the final at Wembley. Bobby Charlton netted twice, and George Best and Brian Kidd got on the scoresheet. It was 30 years until United's next triumph in the competition. Ferguson's side scored two injury-time goals to come from a goal down to beat Bayern Munich in the 1999 final. And in 2008, United beat Chelsea on penalties in Moscow to add a third title.
