Villarreal defender Juan Foyth admits he was flattered by Aston Villa’s interest in him back in January.
Unai Emery targeted a new right-back in the winter window and assessed several options before signing Andres Garcia.
Oscar Mingueza was considered, while Wesley Franca was also a target, but Villa decided to recruit Garcia instead.
Signed for just £6m, Garcia is already proving impressive value after just a handful of appearances.
Foyth, meanwhile, was being considered by Emery after he worked with the former Tottenham defender at Villarreal.
They won the Europa League together in 2021 and Emery appreciated his versatility.
In the end, Villa went for Garcia, before then also loaning in Axel Disasi, who is also capable of playing as a right full-back.
Speaking to AS about Villa’s interest in January, former Tottenham defender Foyth said: “I had disconnected a bit during the Christmas break, but I saw that there was talk of that possibility. I know Villarreal and Aston Villa spoke, but only up to that point.
“I learned a lot from Unai; I became more mature and a better footballer. I was surprised that they were interested in me almost without playing. I thought it was strange, since I’d been practically blank for a year.
“That interest shows the confidence Unai has in me, and I’m flattered.”
