Graham Potter has been unable to truly turn around West Ham’s fortunes since replacing Julen Lopetegui, with the 1-1 draw at Everton another disappointing outcome in the circumstances.

The Hammers had won just one of the former Chelsea man’s first six matches since he was appointed in January after a dismal start to the season under the Spaniard.

United enjoyed a mini-revival with victories over Arsenal and Leicester City, but have reverted back to type with a loss against Newcastle United and a draw with Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday (15 March).

Lineker and Shearer agree on West Ham issues

Alan Shearer has identified the issue that Potter faces at West Ham after the Goodison Park draw and Gary Lineker agreed with his argument.

The former Newcastle star believes that the Hammers need to improve their form at the London Stadium.

Speaking on Match of the Day (15 March, 23:38), he said: “I think it was important that they bounced back after the performance [against Newcastle]. I think they were really poor against Newcastle.

“They’ve actually been better away from home than they have been at home. They have got to find that balance.”

Lineker was in total agreement, saying: “Yeah.”

Potter will improve West Ham next season

It is hardly fair to judge Potter at the moment given the mess that he inherited from Lopetegui and the injury issues that he has faced.

The Irons were not clear of relegation danger when he came to East London and had won just six matches from 20 in the Premier League.

Potter has been without Niclas Fullkrug and Michael Antonio for a significant period and star man Jarrod Bowen has also spent time on the sidelines.

Potter will be given the chance to overhaul the squad in the summer transfer window and the focus is on judging which players should still be at Rush Green next season.

Several members of the squad are fighting for their futures at the club, so it is imperative that they impress the former Brighton boss so that they are kept around once he puts his own stamp on the team and builds a foundation for future success.

Potter will be hoping to guide the Hammers back towards the European qualification places in his first full season in the dugout, but he faces a tough task given the lack of quality that is available to him at the moment.
