At least 51 people were killed and about 100 others injured in a fire that erupted during a concert at a nightclub in Kocani, North Macedonia, the country’s interior minister said Sunday.
The venue’s roof caught fire around 2:35 a.m. during a local pop group’s concert, Panche Toshkovski said during a news conference Sunday morning.
State news outlet MIA reported that sparks from pyrotechnics caused the venue’s roof to ignite and the building to fill with heavy smoke. Toshkovski said one person was arrested without providing further details, the Associated Press reported.
In a statement on Facebook, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said it was a sad day for North Macedonia. “The loss of so many young lives is irreparable, and the pain of families, loved ones and friends is immeasurable,” he wrote.
