The Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly “open” to trade talks with veteran tight end, Dallas Goedert. In light of this, and the fact that the Colts desperately need a tight end, trading for Dallas Goedert would be a wise decision. There is already a bit of history between these two franchises, so the conversation would be smooth. Colts head coach Shane Steichen was the Eagles offensive coordinator from 2021-2022. Most recently, the Colts traded away tight end Kylen Granson to the Eagles. The Colts are also in a financial position where acquiring a playmaker like Dallas Goedert is quite feasible.
This is not to say that the Colts should forgo pursuing a tight end within the first 60 picks in the draft. They should try to acquire the best tight end available in the first or second round. Rather, this is to say that with how desperately bad the Colts tight end room has been, they need to bolster this entire unit and start fresh. This would include acquiring pieces in the draft and free agency.
Why the Colts Should Pursue Dallas Goedert
His Career Thus Far
Dallas Goedert has played seven seasons in the NFL all of which have been with the Eagles. Since coming into the league in 2018, he has never made a Pro Bowl but has been an extremely solid and consistent playmaker. His career receiving success rate is 61.8 and his career catch percentage is 73.3. Last season, however, was a down year for him, in terms of production. He missed several games due to injury, but when on the field he was very reliable. In the 10 games he was able to play last season, he accumulated 496 yards, two touchdowns, and a catch percentage rate of 80%.
To put things into perspective, the Colts leading tight end, Kylen Granson accumulated just 182 yards in 6 starts and 17 appearances. Dallas Goedert is not a game-changing player, but for the Colts, he is a big improvement from what they currently have. Throughout his career, it is evident that he is just what the Colts need in a tight end. They need someone reliable, can be a security blanket for quarterbacks, and has sure hands.
His Immediate Impact on the Offense
As mentioned, a Dallas Goedert signing would be a major improvement for the Colts tight end room. With the current group that the Colts have, the ceiling is not very high, but adding Goedert to the mix would instantly lift the ceiling and would also lift the floor. If a team trades its best tight end who managed 182 yards in one season, that team has some major issues at tight end. Goedert would not be the kind of tight end that the Colts could continually rely on as the number one guy. However, he could serve as a solid number two behind a high draft pick.
At this point, any tight end with a semblance of consistency and talent would be an improvement for the Colts. Nonetheless, Goedert is probably the biggest and most talented tight end on the market right now. If the Colts want to continue the momentum from the first wave of free agent signings, they need to continue bolstering the team and they can do that by signing a talent like Dallas Goedert.
