Newcastle United have been considering plans to build a new stadium or expand St James’ Park as they look to continue their recent on-field progress.
The Tyneside club have struggled to comply with the financial rules since the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) secured its £305million takeover in 2021.
The Mail reported on 13 March the north-east giants are planning to build a new 65,000-capacity super stadium on Leazes Park, which sits next to St James’ Park.
The newspaper revealed plans have been shelved for now for the redevelopment of their existing stadium, where the capacity stands at 52,305.
Newcastle’s new stadium is expected to cost £1billion if they decide to push forward with the plans.
Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider PIF will pay for the development and gift the new facility to the club.

Newcastle better placed to finance new stadium than Man United
Borson insisted Newcastle’s financial situation is different to Man United due to their ownership structure.
He told Football Insider: “It would be very simple.
“It’s just not the same issue that Manchester United have. PIF could effectively pay for the whole thing.
“It wouldn’t impact PSR. It wouldn’t impact squad cost control that’s coming. They could literally just gift it to the club and it wouldn’t be an issue.
“It’s just completely different from the Manchester United situation, where you’ve got effectively three different blocks of shareholders. You have got the Glazers, INEOS and public shareholders in New York.
“It’s just a totally different situation, but it’s very easy for Newcastle. You can understand if you wanted to get Newcastle in the mix, it’s the easiest thing to do.
“I mean, it’s not that easy because it’s probably going to cost you more than £1billion.
“But from a financial perspective to get around the restrictions that they’ve got through various financial fair play mechanisms, both in Europe and in the Premier League, is to build a new stadium and for PIF to gift it to them effectively, and that’s what’s going to happen.”
