Steelers Linked To 40-Year-Old QB As Aaron Rodgers Backup Plan

"Younger'' isn't necessarily "better.''

But there can be a point of ridiculousness when it comes to betting on "older.''

The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback conundrum is dragging on into the weekend because Aaron Rodgers is ... well ...

A drag.

So Plan B remains alive as Russell Wilson left his meetings this week with the New York Giants and the Cleveland Browns without signing a contract.

Meanwhile, as the Steelers frustratingly wait on Aaron Rodgers to make a decision after offering him a deal on Wednesday, free agent quarterbacks are falling off the board.

The Steelers are waiting on Rodgers. The Giants are waiting on Rodgers.

The Browns are ... well ... still the Browns.

And in Pittsburgh? Now there is buzz that if the 41-year-old Rodgers doesn't give the Steelers a "yes,'' that the team might turn to another ancient warrior for help.

Would you believe ... Joe Flacco?1

Rodgers reached out to the Giants last month during the NFL Scouting Combine looking for work. At that time he had no prospects and seemed desperate for work.

Now it appears suitors are coming out of the proverbial woodwork as the Steelers, Giants and Vikings all appear to be interested. ... but they all are frozen now because Rodgers is somehow in control.

For Wilson, it's the Browns, Steelers or Giants, and it's possible Pittsburgh isn't even interested in him any longer. Mason Rudolph is back in the family but he's likely playing second fiddle to whoever is starting.

For all three teams, it will be a matter of money and availability.

How much does Wilson want? How much does Rodgers want? For Wilson, it may come down to a backup role somewhere or remaining unsigned until the season when a starter goes down with an injury somewhere.

And what about Flacco?

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported Saturday that Pittsburgh is among three teams with links to the former Super Bowl champion QB.

Flacco most recently played for the Colts, and before that helped the Browns to a playoff berth. He had 257 career touchdowns and a 105-86 regular-season record as a starter.

"Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson are getting the headlines. Joe Flacco is waiting patiently to see how it plays out," Florio writes. "Flacco recently visited the Giants. He's in play, we're told, for jobs with the Steelers, Browns, and Vikings."

Florio suggests that Flacco at a cheap price might be the Steelers' "best move.''

We're not sure about that. But this we know: Flacco is 40 and Rodgers is 41 and there is nothing "best move'' about any of that. And in the end?

Nothing moves here until Aaron Rodgers does.
