Newcastle United starting XI for the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool at Wembley.

Eddie Howe has named his Newcastle United starting XI for the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool (kick-off 4:30pm).

Howe is aiming to become the first manager since Joe Harvey in 1969 but faces a Liverpool side who Bruno Guimaraes described as “the best team in the world”. The Reds are currently 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League table with a game in-hand.

And the Magpies’ head coach has kept faith with the same team that beat West Ham United on Monday night.

Nick Pope gets the nod ahead of Martin Dubravka in goal, while Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Fabian Schar and Tino Livramento form the back four. In midfield, Bruno Guimaraes captains the side and is supported by Sandro Tonali and Joelinton.

In attack, Harvey Barnes lines up on the left and Jacob Murphy is on the right with Alexander Isak leading the line.

Speaking ahead of the game, Howe said: “I think it does feel different [to the defeat to Manchester United two years ago], I think the whole thing this season has felt different in the sense that I think we've just gone about our business in a really calm, controlled way, professional way.

“We've had a really tough run of fixtures in the Carabao Cup and I think to attack those games in the way that we did and of course you're in the midst of a busy campaign, Premier League, FA Cup, we've sort of just gone from round to round and we've ended up in the final.

“There's been a lot less emotion, there's been a lot less noise I think outside of in here and hopefully that helps us in our performance in the game, you never quite know what effect that will have but we've been very much focused on our build-up and preparation and getting the game plan right, so I'd say that's the biggest difference.”

Like the starting XI, the bench is unchanged from West Ham. Newcastle are without Anthony Gordon through suspension, and Sven Botman, Lewis Hall and Jamaal Lascelles because of injury. 17-year-old Sean Neave is among the substitutes.
