Ravens Land New Backup to Lamar Jackson, Sign Former Cowboys QB

The Baltimore Ravens were looking for a quality backup quarterback behind Lamar Jackson. They have now been able to find that quarterback.

Bringing in quality quarterback insurance is pivotal for any team wanting to be a legitimate Super Bowl contender. Too often, teams are derailed due to injuries to their starter and don't have a player capable of stepping in and winning football games.

That will not be the case for the Ravens.

According to a report from NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, Baltimore has agreed to a two-year deal worth up to $12.2 million with former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Cooper Rush.

Landing Rush is a very good move for the Ravens. He has proven on multiple occasions that he can play at a starting level when Dak Prescott has missed time due to injury.

During the 2024 NFL season, Rush was called upon once again. After Prescott went down with his season-ending injury, Rush became the starter.

In 12 total games played, Rush completed 60.7 percent of his pass attempts for 1,844 yards, 12 touchdowns, and five interceptions.

Being able to land that kind of a backup on a deal worth a max of around $6.1 million per season is well worth the price. Baltimore can now rest easy that if the worst-case scenario does happen and Jackson goes down, Rush will be able to step in and keep their offense humming at a high level.

Rush has spent his entire career to this point with the Cowboys. Making the move now is a change for him, but a great opportunity.

Looking ahead to the 2025 NFL season, the Ravens should be one of the top Super Bowl contenders in the league. In an ideal scenario, Rush won't play, but if called upon he will have a great supporting cast around him.

As for the Cowboys, they now have a hole behind Prescott. Will Grier is the only other quarterback on the roster. Jerry Jones will need to figure out how to replace Rush.

Perhaps Dallas could look to simply re-sign Trey Lance, who is also currently a free agent.

Hopefully, Baltimore doesn't have to find out what Rush could do within its offense. But, the addition does help bring confidence for the 2025 season that the Ravens can weather any storm that's thrown at them.
