The New York Giants are facing a tight squeeze at quarterback, awaiting a decision from Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers with the final call likely out of their hands.
One NFL analyst believes the Giants will go another route, swinging a blockbuster trade up to the top of the draft board to land this year's top quarterback prospect.
The Athletic's Michael Silver, Dianna Russini and Alec Lewis reported that the Giants and the other suitor for Rodgers, the Pittsburgh Steelers, are waiting for Minnesota Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell to make a decision on Rodgers. The report noted that the Vikings are the preferred team for Rodgers, but haven't decided on whether they want to sign him or move forward with J.J. McCarthy as the starter.
"Rodgers has been targeted by the Steelers and Giants but has essentially put both teams on hold while he waits for clarity regarding the Vikings' situation," the report noted. "If Minnesota ceases to be an option, it's also possible that Rodgers will turn down both the Steelers (a 2024 playoff team) and Giants and instead opt for retirement."
CBS Sports insider Kyle Stackpole believes the Giants may go another direction if they miss out on Rodgers, trading up to the No. 1 spot in the NFL draft to land Miami signal-caller Cam Ward.
"The reports are that the Titans like Cam Ward, but they'll probably like what the desperate Giants will offer them more," Stackpole wrote. "After whiffing in free agency, New York trades up to draft its franchise quarterback."
