Pundit Robbie Savage has praised Aston Villa’s recruitment as good work in the transfer market is paying off for Unai Emery’s team.
Winter window signings Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio have proved to be excellent additions for Villa, having signed on loan from Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain respectively.
Rashford, in particular, seems to be enjoying his football after a tough time at his parent club.
He has notched three assists in his nine appearances for Villa to date and has earned himself a place in Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad thanks to his recent good form.
In his column for The Mirror, Savage said: “Villa’s recruitment and shaping of their squad has been terrific this season.
“They held on to (Ollie) Watkins when Arsenal came calling with a £60million bid and the £64m sale of Jhon Duran (to Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr) - which looked questionable at the time - was a masterstroke.
“It enabled Villa to bring in Rashford and Asensio, whose link-up play and productivity has looked as if they’ve played together most of their careers.
“Rashford’s parting with Manchester United was a sad affair because he didn’t look as if he was enjoying his football at Old Trafford and he was called out by his coach Ruben Amorim over his attitude in training.
“That’s not a good look, but he is playing with a smile on his face again.
“He must be relishing the exhilarating atmosphere of Villa Park, playing in front of the future King and his renewed joy has been rewarded by his call-up into Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad.”
Savage’s comments come after Prince William was in attendance at Villa Park in midweek as Emery’s men booked their place in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Asensio scored twice, with Rashford setting up the second, as the hosts beat Club Brugge 3-0 on the night and 6-1 on aggregate.
