Former Premier League referee Mike Dean has explained that although Alexander Isak was onside as he tapped home what he thought was Newcastle's second goal against Liverpool, VAR were correct in disallowing the goal. The striker wagged his finger at the suggestion of offside while celebrations were cut short.
He met a rebound at the back post after another smart set-piece routine, following in from Dan Burn's shot. There was a question over whether Isak was beyond the last man as the initial shot was parried by Caoimhin Kelleher. The Swede was adamant that he was onside and Manchester United icon Gary Neville agreed with him on commentary.
But once VAR looked at the incident, it became clear that although Isak was onside, one of his team-mates infringed while standing in front of the goalkeeper and impeded Kelleher's view before the shot was palmed to Isak.
Neville asked Mike Dean: "Is that why it is going to be disallowed, because BG is in front of Kelleher?"
The former official replied: "That's the only reason why it can be given offside because Isak is onside by a good half a yard, two yards.
"[Bruno] Guimaraes is in line with the keeper's vision there, he impedes him from trying to get the ball and the keeper loses sight of the ball. That's why he's been given offside.
"Isak is definitely onside, Guimaraes has to be interfering with the goalkeeper. It was a good decision by Eddie Smart on the line.
Fortunately for Isak, only moments later he found the back of the net again and this time his effort counted. Tino Livramento's cross to the back post was knocked back by Jacob Murphy to Isak, who finished with conviction and there was no doubt in his mind that he would be on the scoresheet.
Dan Burn opened the scoring in the first half, meeting a deep corner with a header that Kelleher could not keep out, having targeted a mismatch at the set-piece with the tall defender towering over Alexis Mac Allister.
